Despite no earlier indication of their interest, there may be a simple explanation as to why Liverpool have turned their attentions to the English winger, and that is to do with Premier League rules.

Liverpool have emerged as a potential landing spot for Jarrod Bowen.

In 2010 the Premier League squad rules were adjusted to limit the maximum number of players that could be registered to 25, and the maximum number of non-homegrown players to 17.

This comes after reports linking Liverpool to Lyon’s Houssem Aouar and PSV’s Donyell Malen.

According to Premier League regulations, clubs are only allowed a maximum of 17 non-‘homegrown’ players within their squad, which may not only encourage Liverpool to sign a homegrown player, but make this a necessity.

The Premier League identify a homegrown player as someone who, irrespective of nationality, has been registered with a club affiliated to either the Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period of at least three entire seasons prior to their 21st birthday.

It was clear that deficiencies within the squad hurt the Reds last season, and being able to register a full 25-man Premier League contingent will only help Jurgen Klopp balance the needs of the team as the season develops.
