Andy Townsend has given his verdict on what one manager has decided about potentially replacing Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, and the club’s new chief, Michael Edwards, is busy trying to find a suitable replacement.

As HITC revealed last week, Ruben Amorim is a leading candidate to succeed Klopp at Anfield.



The 39-year-old is in charge of Sporting Lisbon at the moment.

Another manager Liverpool looked at in recent weeks is Xabi Alonso, who has led Bayer Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title this season.

HITC reported in March that Alonso has decided to stay at Bayer despite interest from Liverpool and Bayern Munich.

Former Chelsea midfielder Andy Townsend has now given his take on Alonso’s decision following the 42-year-old former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder successfully guiding Bayer to the Bundesliga title this past weekend.

Townsend said about Alonso on talkSPORT (6:39 am, April 15, 2024): “When you think about Xabi Alonso’s decision to turn down the advances of Liverpool or even Bayern, and teams like that, why not?

“When you have got a real good group of players and you have just got something going, why not stay there and just enjoy that moment as well as much as anything else for a little bit, not forever.”

In my opinion, Xabi Alonso could regret his decision to take the Liverpool managerial job this summer.

Liverpool are one of the biggest clubs in the world and have been successful in recent years.

Under Klopp, they have won the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League.

The Merseyside club also have an excellent squad with world-class players such as Mohamed Salah, Alisson, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The ingredients are there for Liverpool to stay successful even after Klopp leaves.

The chance to manage Liverpool does not come very often.

Yes, Alonso is only 42 now, but what if the manager who replaces Klopp is just as successful as the German or even more and stays at Anfield for as long as he did?
