Liverpool and the wider football world are mourning the unimaginable loss of Diogo Jota and his younger brother, Andre Silva.

As tributes pour in, more information has come to light about why the pair were driving through Spain on their way back to the UK.

Jota and Andre were travelling overnight toward the port of Santander, intending to board a ferry to Plymouth rather than fly (via reports by Daily Mail).

According to reports in Portugal (via same reports), doctors had recently advised Diogo not to travel by air following lung surgery.

While Jota sometimes preferred driving to manage occasional breathing discomfort, this time he had a medical reason to avoid flying altogether.

The Portuguese brothers were driving a Lamborghini Urus SUV when the tragedy occurred.

The car left the carriageway, rolled and caught fire in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Emergency crews arrived quickly but were unable to save them.

Liverpool Football Club described the accident as an “unimaginable loss,” with tributes continuing to fill the area outside Anfield.

He leaves behind his wife Rute, their three children and countless friends and teammates who will never forget his generosity, his talent or his spirit.

André Silva, aged just 26, also pursued his dream, playing in Portugal’s second division.
