A few of Liverpool’s old boys have found themselves either on the cusp of being released or having been cut off already.
Aston Villa appear poised to terminate Philippe Coutinho’s contract two years early, despite the Brazilian midfielder remaining technically under contract until 2026.
The 32-year-old, who last featured for Villa in August 2023, has spent the past two seasons on loan at Qatari club Al-Duhail and his boyhood side Vasco da Gama.
Vasco’s president Pedrinho has publicly expressed a “great desire” to retain Coutinho beyond his current loan expiration on June 30, though financial constraints make a permanent deal unlikely without Villa’s cooperation.
Meanwhile, West Ham confirmed this week that former Liverpool striker Danny Ings will depart upon contract expiry this summer?
The 32-year-old managed just five goals in 69 appearances for the Hammers.
Now Wigan Athletic has confirmed that former Liverpool man Andy Lonergan has left the club after serving as a player-coach for the Latics this past 2024/25 campaign.
Many Reds fans will not remember the now 41-year-old’s time at Liverpool.
Back in July 2019, Klopp faced a goalkeeping crisis during pre-season.
With Alisson Becker recovering from Copa America duties and backup options limited, the Preston-born keeper – then a free agent after leaving Middlesbrough – was handed a short-term deal.

Though he never made a competitive appearance, Lonergan was in the dressing room during a season that saw Liverpool lift the Premier League, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup.
After leaving Liverpool in 2020, Lonergan’s playing career wound through Everton, Stoke City, and finally Wigan, where he transitioned into a coaching role while remaining registered as a player.
At the DW Stadium, he mentored 23-year-old goalkeeper Sam Tickle, who kept 20 clean sheets en route to a League One Team of the Season award.
Wigan head coach Ryan Lowe said:
“I would like to place on record my appreciation for the efforts and commitment of all those leaving the Club this summer and wish them well in their future careers.”
“It is always a difficult part of the job to say goodbye to players, especially on the back of a campaign, where they’ve all worn the shirt with pride and given everything.”
