Georginio Wijnaldum says he joined Paris Saint-Germain to be part of one of the "best squads" in Europe, adding he is excited for his new challenge in France.

The Holland international's contract at Liverpool expired this June, alerting a number of top clubs, including Barcelona and PSG to the midfielder's availability.

Liverpool were determined to keep the 30-year-old at the club and offered him fresh terms.

But the Dutchman opted to end his five-year stay on Merseyside and has penned a lucrative three-year contract with PSG.

Upon penning his new deal, Wijnaldum said: "Signing for Paris Saint-Germain is a new challenge for me.

"I'm joining one of the best squads in Europe and I want to bring all my desire and commitment to this ambitious project.

"Paris Saint-Germain have proved how good they are in recent years and I am convinced that together, with our supporters, we can go even further and higher."

Wijnaldum spoke to the press before Thursday's announcement and confirmed problems behind the scenes at Liverpool were a driving force in him leaving the club.

Wijnaldum told Voetbal International via Sport Witness: "I am still emotional because at that moment you realise: It was my last game for Liverpool. Also, the fact that before me, many players left who didn't get something like that makes it special for me."

On why he is leaving Liverpool, the Dutchman added: "There are many supporters who ask me why I didn't just accept the offer from Liverpool to extend my contract.

"But of course, it's not just that. It's about much more than that. There are things happening behind the scenes that you cannot influence as a player. I will explain that after the tournament because now only Orange [Netherlands] counts.

"What I do want to say is that the people at the training complex, the staff of the club, and my fellow players would have liked to keep me.

"I did tell them a bit more. After that, they understood my decision completely. That is important to me."
