Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish did not meet with Marc Guehi and his representatives on transfer deadline day until 6pm, because he was attending a fitness class at a Soho gym, according to reports.

Head coach Oliver Glasner made it clear that he did not want his captain to leave, even though he is now set to exit on a free transfer at the end of the season.

The 25-year-old is thought to be furious at the outcome, having acted respectfully all summer while the likes of Alexander Isak and Yoane Wissa effectively went on strike and got their desired transfers.

Guehi was waiting in Liverpool’s London offices after conducting a medical, once Palace had given permission, and believed that he would be joining Isak on Merseyside by the end of the day.

But concerns arose when a replacement was not heading through the door at Selhurst Park and Parish sat down with Guehi and his advisors, but only one hour before the deadline.

The 60-year-old had previously been attending a fitness class at a Soho gym before explaining the situation to his side’s leader, according to the BBC.

A deal sheet was submitted for Guehi, allowing Palace and Liverpool extra time to complete the transfer after the deadline, but Parish had to tell the England international that he could not sanction a sale that evening.

Palace did complete the signing of Toulouse centre-back Jaydee Canvot, but a more experienced option was thought to be necessary alongside the 19-year-old.

Ousmane Diomande, Evan Ndicka and Igor were all considered at different stages of the window, but none materialised.
