It was believed that the Italian sadly was not chosen among the maximum allowance of 17 non-homegrown players.
However, ahead of the new European campaign there was a change to UEFA’s squad rules.
The update to UEFA’s rules now allows clubs to replace players ruled out for the remainder of the season due to long-term injuries.
Previously, teams were only permitted to make changes to their 25-man before the league stage deadline, with no in-season substitutions allowed.
Under the revised provision, a player sidelined with a “long-term injury” can be swapped out at any point before the knockout stages begin.
This adjustment was introduced to give clubs more flexibility in managing their squads amid a congested fixture calendar and increasing injury risks.
And it looks like are looking to take Liverpool full advantage of the recent UEFA regulation tweak to bolster their Champions League squad after defender Giovanni Leoni’s season-ending ACL injury.
Manager Arne Slot confirmed on Friday that Italy winger Federico Chiesa will be registered in Leoni’s spot for Europe’s premier club competition:
“[It is] true.
We have looked into this process [of changing the Champions League squad].”
“Some people do this.
So, we’re looking into [registering Federico Chiesa].”
It will no doubt come as great news for Federico Chiesa, who has been the perfect professional at Liverpool despite not always getting his way.
