‘Will get angry’: Erling Haaland reacts after £26m Dortmund move for Liverpool-linked Malen

Erling Haaland has joked, via TuttoMercatoWEB, that Donyell Malen will make him angry if he does not perform after joining Borussia Dortmund, despite interest from Liverpool.

The Bundesliga outfit have completed a £26m move for the pacey youngster to head to the Westfalenstadion from PSV Eindhoven. Malen replaces Jadon Sancho in North Rhine-Westphalia after the England international’s move to Manchester United.

Malen passed a medical with Dortmund during the German side’s pre-season training camp in Switzerland, after snubbing interest from Liverpool. O Jogo reported before his BVB move that Jurgen Klopp’s side had held talks with PSV over a potential transfer.

Liverpool would have sent Marko Grujic to the Netherlands in a player-plus-cash exchange for Malen. Jurgen Klopp was keen to sign the 22-year-old attacker after Malen offered 27 goals and 10 assists last season. He can also play anywhere across the attacking line.

But Haaland is not focusing on the goals Malen will bring to Borussia Dortmund. Instead, the Norwegian is focusing on how the 13-cap forward will help him score more next term.

“I told Donyell to serve me a lot of assists, otherwise I will get angry,” Haaland joked. “I hope I can play together with him in attack. He comes to us to make a difference. Donyell will have to give positive energy and he will have to do it right away, because Borussia Dortmund are a great club.”

Despite Haaland’s comments, Liverpool will be the angry side, not the striker, after Malen joined Borussia Dortmund. Klopp would have loved working with the young and exuberant forward, who could have helped refresh the Reds’ ageing frontline.

Malen, at 22, also has immense potential still to fulfil and could explode in Germany, just as Haaland did. He’ll offer new boss Marco Rose a buzz of creativity he would have otherwise lost without Sancho.

Sancho would also deal Liverpool another blow by performing for Manchester United after Klopp missed out on Malen, the man who replaced him at Dortmund. The Dutchman is a superstar in waiting, that could have seen the Reds demand a big profit in future windows.
