Wolverhampton Wanderers began their Premier League season against Manchester City in emotional fashion.

This was not just about football.

Before the ball was even kicked at Molineux, Wolves fans came together to honour one of their most loved former players, Diogo Jota.

The Portuguese forward, who spent four years at the club before joining Liverpool, was remembered in front of a packed South Bank.

Supporters had been preparing all week for this moment.

Fundraisers were organised, banners were made, and anticipation built ahead of the tribute?

F

or Wolves fans, Jota’s time at the club left a lasting mark.

And for Liverpool supporters, it was another reminder of how much he meant both on and off the pitch.

Just before the 17:30 BST kick-off against Manchester City, the South Bank unveiled a huge tifo.

It showed Jota celebrating with his arms outstretched.

At the bottom, the words read: “We’ll remember you when you walk in fields of gold.”

As the banner went up, Sting’s song Fields of Gold played around the ground.

Fans clapped and chanted his name.

A planned minute of applause followed, as has been set across all Premier League matches this weekend.

Wolves fans also clapped again in the 18th minute, a nod to Jota’s shirt number during his time at the club.

The tribute drew in familiar faces.

Jota’s wife, Rute Cardoso, was present, along with his parents Isabel and Joaquim Silva, who were moved to tears during the moment.

Former Wolves teammate Ruben Neves attended, as did Portugal coach Roberto Martinez.

A special matchday programme was also released in his memory.

Liverpool fans will remember their own tributes earlier this month, when Jota’s name was sung at Anfield before, during, and after their 4-2 win over Bournemouth.

Wolves have now added their voice, with the tifo and applause marking how much he meant to both clubs.

For Wolves, Jota was more than just a striker who scored 44 goals across three seasons.

He was a player who helped lead the club from the Championship to the Premier League.

His induction into the club’s Hall of Fame last month showed the depth of that legacy

Saturday’s tribute confirmed it: Jota will not be forgotten.
