Wolves have made a risky move at the start of the new season which could leave their owners having second thoughts.

The Midlands giants have had an awful start to the new Premier League campaign, sitting bottom of the table with no points from their first five games.

It comes off the back of a difficult summer for the Old Gold, in which star man Matheus Cunha completed a move to Manchester United, with Rayan Ait-Nouri also joining Man City.

Despite their abysmal form, manager Vitor Pereira was handed a brand new five-year contract by Wolves last week.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that it is a very risky move to extend Pereira’s contract, given the current situation.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that Wolves‘ ownership group, Fosun, may be having second thoughts about whether they want to be involved with the club.

The Chinese investment company, headed by Chairman Guo Guangchang, have had control of the Midlands side since 2016.

Wyness added that chairman Jeff Shi is aiming for stability by giving Pereira a new deal, and could be being kept in the dark about Fosun’s doubts.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Yes, I think it is a very risky move.

I would not have been giving Pereira another three-year contract at this moment.

“Look, I think there’s real second thoughts coming from Fosun, the owners, about whether they want this club.

“Jeff Shi says everything that they want to hear in terms of, we’re in it for the long term, but I actually think behind the scenes that Fosun are having second thoughts themselves, and I don’t think Jeff Shi would be the one to know it either.”

Meanwhile, Wolves may have included a hidden clause in Pereira’s new contract which would enable them to sack him if needed.

That is according to former Manchester United and Sunderland chief scout Mick Brown, who claims that the Midlands-based side are now among the favourites to be relegated this season.

Brown believes there could be a clause in the new deal that reduces Pereira’s pay-off if Wolves decide to part ways with the Portuguese boss.

Therefore, it would allow the hierarchy to address the situation and make a change if the poor form continues.
