Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has given supporters a glimpse of the true extent of his injury after pictures were released of him working hard in the gym at the club’s AXA Training Centre in Kirkby.

The England international has been out of action since November after Gomez sustained a horrific knee injury while on national team duty.

His knee reportedly gave way under no challenge from any of his England teammates. As a result, Gomez was forced to undergo surgery to repair the tendon.

Similarly to Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool have given no time-frame on the 23-year-old’s injury, although early reports indicated he was unlikely to return again this season.

However, the centre-back is seemingly making good progress and has stepped up his recovery this week with Liverpool posting pictures of Gomez being put through his paces on the club’s official website.

And most noticeable in the released photos was the size of the scar on Gomez’s right knee which was a result of the surgery.

Regardless of the scar, it was encouraging to see the former Charlton defender working at his fitness and putting in hard-yards at the gym.

Of course, it is unlikely that Gomez will play again this season given the severity and timing of his injury, but there is still a cause for optimism.

This isn’t the first setback of Gomez’s career, after all, and his previous experiences in recovery will certainly aid him this time around.

Big miss

Liverpool have seriously struggled of late without the influence of Jurgen Klopp’s first-choice centre-back pairing. The manager, then, must be counting down the days until Gomez and Van Dijk are able to return.

The Reds extended their winless to five matches following the defeat to Burnley on Thursday night. During that period, Liverpool have scored just once and have taken just three points from an available 15.

Liverpool’s remarkable record at Anfield in the league, too, was extinguished as a result of the loss to Burnley. It was a run that stretched 1369 days back to April 2017 – a 68-match unbeaten run.

There is no doubt that Liverpool’s highly-documented struggles have been partially due to the absence of both Gomez and Van Dijk.

Let’s see what supporters had to say following the footage of Gomez at the club’s training ground.
