‘World-beater’: Florian Wirtz compared to former Liverpool star who Jurgen Klopp loved

Liverpool’s midfield talent over the years has been nothing short of incredible, and they are about to add another one to the list.

The midfield battle is where games can be won or lost and the Reds have had their fair share of top-quality players in this position throughout their history.

Last season, the combination of Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai swung many games in Liverpool’s favour and was one of the key reasons they got their hands on the Premier League title.

However, despite their exceptional performances, the Reds are still trying to strengthen in this area and Florian Wirtz will certainly do just that, even if it does come at a hefty price of £116m.

Wirtz has previously been compared to Lionel Messi, indicating just how good he is, but he has recently been likened to a player a little closer to home and an individual who got the Anfield crowd up on their feet.

Fresh off the back of hoisting the Champions League trophy aloft in 2020 with Bayern Munich, it came as a surprise to see Thiago Alcantara join Liverpool that summer, mainly as he was already 29 and this did not fit the profile the Reds usually went for.

However, other than his injuries, he was a revelation and brought something different to the midfield that not many others could produce, making him a real one-of-a-kind player.

But, speaking on talkSPORT, Dean Saunders believes that Wirtz is the same type of player and will show a resemblance to Thiago when he makes the switch to Anfield.

“This boy is a world beater and when you watch him, it’s going to be like watching Thiago,” Saunders said.

“You know when Thiago used to play for Liverpool and he used to do things nobody else could do and you think ‘I love watching him play’, this boy is the same.

“He can beat people, score goals, has assists, can play off the left and play as a number 10, which is his best position probably.”

Thiago certainly added that bit of flair needed at the time for Liverpool and he single-handedly ran games at points.

Jurgen Klopp played a key role in bringing him to the club and he admitted that if it weren’t for injuries, he could have left a legacy like no other.

“In a parallel world, I would have loved to see Thiago’s career without injuries,” Klopp previously said.

“I’m not sure if it is the best but it would have been one of the best I would have ever saw.

He can do things that, before, I never thought was possible and he’s in control of absolutely everything on the pitch.”

It is clear to see why the comparisons have been made as Wirtz has been said to have been doing the same things in the Bundesliga over the last few years, making this move one for Liverpool fans to get excited over.
