Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez teased supporters this week when he announced via social media on Sunday that he would reveal his ‘new club’ today.

Having been linked with the Premier League - and Manchester United, in particular - for some time, the talented Spaniard caused quite the stir.

Under contract at the Wanda Metropolitano until 2026, Saul’s new club is likely to be an eSports team, rather than him announcing a transfer move, but the announcement will cause a Twitter reaction nonetheless.

A move to the Premier League, though, could take place in the future.

Someone with his talent and ability will always attract the elite teams and Liverpool, as one of those, would have taken note of his performances over the last few seasons.

It would have been hard to miss his showings against the Reds in the last-16 of the Champions League: he started both matches and scored the winning goal in the first leg, impressing greatly on each occasion.

But should Liverpool be taking a look? They will know doubt be aware of his qualities, but are already well-stocked in the centre of the park.

As Liverpool correspondent Paul Gorst said during a live Q&A session on the Liverpool ECHO website, there are a couple of reasons why Jurgen Klopp will not have been tempted by the Spanish star.

He explained: "I think those three [Jordan Henderson, Gini Wijnaldum and James Milner] - although they are approaching or are already in their 30s - are among the fittest in the squad, so don't think they are ready to drop out any time soon.

"Saul is an interesting one - a very good player but one of those you feel thrived in that mentality Diego Simeone created at Atletico.

"I certainly don't see him at Liverpool this summer."

In future, Liverpool will need to refresh their midfield area, but it seems very unlikely that anyone in that department will be brought in this summer, let alone a 25-year-old who would cost a huge fee.

While the Reds mull over whether they have enough cash to splash out on Timo Werner, looking to spend elsewhere will not be on the agenda.

Liverpool fans can watch for Saul’s declaration with as much intrigue as everyone else, but the Spaniard will not be announcing a move to Anfield - at least not this summer.
