Liverpool kick off the Premier League season on Friday with an evening match at home against Bournemouth.

It has been a tumultuous summer at Anfield, with the tragic loss of Diogo Jota still at the very forefront of everyone’s minds.

Although Liverpool have been especially active in the transfer market, Sunday’s Community Shield defeat against Crystal Palace was a reminder that we do not yet know how the players will truly be affected.

One player who certainly did not look his usual self against Palace was Mohamed Salah.

Salah has had a relatively quiet pre-season and carried that into his display at Wembley.

Having skied a penalty in the shootout, some Liverpool fans may be harbouring worries over the Egyptian heading into the campaign.

But Salah loves the opening day of the Premier League season.

However, Merson has warned fans not to get used to the 33-year-old scoring this season.

When Salah put his penalty over the Wembley bar on Sunday, it was the second time he had missed the target from 12 yards in less than a week.

Fans should not worry too much, the No.

11 usually turns it on when the real stuff starts, and he absolutely loves an opening day fixture at Anfield.

Nevertheless, writing for Sportskeeda, Merson says a goal on the first game may not translate into another good season for Salah.

“I ain’t so sure about Salah this season,” says the Arsenal legend.

“And, unlike last time, Liverpool have enough players who can replace him in the starting XI if he has a bad run.”

“Salah has scored in each of the last seven opening games for Liverpool in the Premier League, so will he do that again?

People have been doing it ever since the Egyptian King arrived in 2017.

However, the reason this year may be different is that Salah is perhaps no longer the only superstar in the Liverpool front line.

And according to Merson, new signing Florian Wirtz might be the man to take over as the main star.

“Only time will tell if Liverpool have made too many changes for the upcoming season,” he says.
