Liverpool will be almost unbeatable if they blow Newcastle out of the water and complete the signing of Marc Guehi.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson assessed Guehi’s transfer options as speculation continues over his future at Crystal Palace.

Guehi has just one year left to run on his contract at Selhurst Park and has so far shown no intention of signing a new deal this summer, alerting Liverpool, Newcastle and several other sides to his availability.

Although they have European football to look forward to next season, Palace’s summer window is yet to really get going, and Robinson told Football Insider that they face a huge decision on Guehi‘s future.

Robinson told Football Insider that it makes “business sense” for Palace to sell Guehi and maximise his value this summer, and argued that Newcastle is the most “obvious” destination for the 25-year-old.

However, Liverpool could continue Newcastle’s misery in the transfer market by beating them in the race to sign Guehi, and Robinson said that if he does join Arne Slot‘s side, they will be unstoppable next term.

Football Insider revealed last month that Liverpool planned to push the button on their move for Guehi if Palace complete the signing of Ousmane Diomande, but both transfers have since stagnated to a halt.

Speaking on the new Inside Track podcast, Robinson argued that it makes little sense for Guehi to stay put at Palace next season, and wondered if Newcastle would finally be able to get one over on Liverpool.

“His contract’s done this season – at 25 years old and an England international, he’s a very much wanted commodity”, Robinson told Football Insider.

“He’s a player that has a lot of admirers in the Premier League, but Palace have been shown to be stubborn.

“There comes a point with Crystal Palace where [you] value the players’ worth and transfer fee, or he’s running down his contract.

“It doesn’t make business sense for them to keep hold of him unless he’s going to sign a new deal.

“Newcastle seems the obvious one.

“If they get Marc Guehi over the line before the end of the window, you’d look at that and say; ‘Wow, they’re the team to beat’ and almost unbeatable.”

Oliver Glasner‘s summer expenditure has been limited to just £3m so far this summer, all of which was spent on Ajax left-back Borna Sosa who arrived after back-up ‘keeper Walter Benitez on a free transfer.

Much of the attention on Palace in this window has been on outgoings with Eberechi Eze also heavily linked with a move away, but Guehi remains their most sellable asset given the time left on his contract.

Liverpool’s record-breaking window looks set to continue with the eventual completion of a deal for Alexander Isak, but beating Newcastle again to pluck Guehi from under their noses would be the perfect end to the summer.
