Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso believes Federico Valverde is just like his former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.

Alonso succeeded Carlo Ancelotti at the beginning of June, signing a three-year deal with the Santiago Bernabeu club.

And it appears that Valverde has already caught his new manager’s eye.

Speaking ahead of his side’s Club World Cup semi-final showdown against Paris Saint-Germain, Alonso explained why the 26-year-old reminds him op the Kop icon.

“I see Fede in many places, like I did with Steven,” he said.

“But given the shape we have and the balance we need, starting from that slightly deeper position, from the second line, that double No 6, he can arrive [in the other area].

“He has that ability to accelerate through, to go through lines very easily and in 30 metres, be there [in shooting positions].

“We are using him in that position and it’s working well.

He has scored twice and he has that ability to accelerate and get close to the area.”

Responding to the comments made by Alonso, the Uruguay international said: “I’m happy, I’m enjoying this.

I am trying to make the most of every minute, giving all my energy until my body can’t give any more.

“When someone like Xabi Alonso talks about you like that, it’s an honour, it makes you proud, and it encourages you to keep working.”

Gerrard and Alonso both played key roles in helping Liverpool win the Champions League in 2005, and when the England international called time on his playing career, the current Los Blancos boss was full of praise.

“He has left a legacy and the memories we have of Stevie,” the Spaniard said.
