Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso has sent a firm message to Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr - they must be involved in the team's defensive efforts.

Dietmar Hamann believed the side lacked enough players willing to put in a defensive effort and correctly predicted they would not retain their La Liga title.

"I don't think Mbappe has improved them," said Hamann in November.



You might beat teams in La Liga, but you won’t beat the best teams in Europe.

"Obviously, they've got great individual quality, but I think there's a lot of question marks about the team.

"It's good for European football to see the level of competition outside," Alonso said.

"You see teams that you don't see as often, who are very good, at a good level.

At the start [of the tournament] we all looked at the European teams, but I think this is good for football in general."
