Newcastle are upping the ante as they look to stave off interest from Tottenham to secure Yoane Wissa’s signing.

The Magpies have endured a woeful transfer window that has seen them be rebuffed by almost every player they have targeted.

Anthony Elanga joined from Nottingham Forest, but Joao Pedro chose a move to Chelsea, Hugo Ekitike broke Toon hearts by joining Liverpool, and Bryan Mbeumo preferred a switch to Man United after interest from the North Eastern club was revealed.

Eddie Howe is now under pressure at Newcastle, sources have told Football Insider, thanks to the club’s woeful window.

However, the former Bournemouth boss may be set to finally secure the striker he has wished for all summer.

Speaking on the Transfers Podcast, Sunday Times journalist Duncan Castles revealed that Newcastle were preparing to return with a second offer for Wissa, after having an initial bid of £25million [Sky Sports] rejected.

He said: (1 August, 29.30mins): “He’s out of contract in 2026 and turns 29 in September.

Newcastle are offering him what’s been described as ‘life-changing’ money.

“He’s made it very clear, I understand, to Brentford that he wants to leave and will push for that move.”

“Newcastle are well-placed to take the player if they can come to an agreement over a fee.

“My understanding is that Brentford will be looking for a very high transfer fee, perhaps as high as £50million.

“They’ll argue that [fee] on the basis of what he’s delivered in the Premier League, and benchmark it against other players that have been sold, or transferred into the division this summer.

“I also understand that there might be interest in the player from Nottingham Forest.

“It could be that there are two, or even more candidates within the Premier League trying to take the player as we get into those final weeks of the window.”

Football Insider Verdict

He’s certainly not as glamorous as a Benjamin Sesko or Alexander Isak, given the fee attached, but Wissa has the pedigree to be the perfect signing for Newcastle.

The Congolese striker seemed to sneak under the radar last season, despite scoring the same number of non-penalty goals as the Magpies’ £150m-rated Swedish striker [BBC Sport].

The caveat, of course, is Wissa’s age.

At 29, he likely only has a few seasons left at the top level, but that is all the Magpies need from him.

If Sesko does arrive from RB Leipzig, the Slovenian striker will have some breathing room to develop whilst the Brentford man takes the mantle as the club’s starting number nine.

Alternatively, if the 22-year-old moves elsewhere and Isak remains, Newcastle will have two of the Premier League’s deadliest strikers at their disposal.
