The newly promoted League One side published their full retained and released list this week, and tucked among the names is one with familiar Anfield ties.According to AFC Wimbledon’s official statement, former Liverpool forward Layton Stewart is among the players whose time at Plough Lane has come to an end, with his loan from FC Thun expiring at the close of the season.Director of Football Craig Cope said: “Firstly, I would like to extend our gratitude to the players and families departing the club this summer.“They have all played a crucial role in the club’s progress over the past few seasons and we wish them well for the future.”“I would like to thank all of the loan players for their contribution this season and wish them well for their future careers. ”Stewart, 23, came through Liverpool’s academy after joining as a boy from Huyton and signed his first professional contract at Anfield in February 2020.His progress was halted by an ACL injury, but the club rewarded him with a new deal in 2021 while he rehabbed.He made his senior debut for the Reds in November 2022, starting in a 2-0 EFL Cup win over Derby County, before leaving permanently for Preston North End in the summer of 2023. A loan move to FC Thun followed in January 2025 – where he won the Swiss Challenge League – and signed permanently before this short stint back in England with the Dons.It continues a busy week of news involving players with Liverpool affiliations across the lower leagues.
