Liverpool Echo IconSportFootballLiverpool FCAlexis Mac Allister has struggled for form and fitness during the early part of the season with LiverpoolAlexis Mac Allister has been backed to rediscover his best form this season with Liverpool told the influx of new signings may have "fried his head". Mac Allister has struggled to regain full match sharpness having been hampered for much of the summer by an injury that affected his pre-season preparations. The Argentina international has not played a full 90 minutes for Liverpool since April and has started only six of 11 games in all competitions this campaign. And former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes believes Mac Allister's plight has not been made any easier by the raft of new faces around him, including £116million attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz and strike duo £125m Alexander Isak and £79m Hugo Ekitike.READ MORE: Florian Wirtz 'not one of those' as Liverpool told what's wrong with £116m transfer“I thought Alexis Mac Allister was brilliant last season, he controlled lots of games," said Scholes.
"He’s been in and out (this season) and signing players has probably fried his head a bit, he’s not sure what’s what."We’re seven games into a Premier League season – these players are so good, and it’ll soon work itself out."Wirtz is still adapting after arriving from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer and Scholes can see similarities to when Juan Sebastian Veron arrived at Manchester United way back in 2001.Speaking on the latest episode of The Overlap Fan Debate in association with Sky Bet, Scholes said: “Florian Wirtz is a little different than Veron. He’s more of a number 10, whereas Veron was more of a central midfield player."He just couldn’t settle into the team, and it disrupted the way the team played.
He was more of a free spirit, and he didn’t play the position that well."I think it’s the same with Wirtz – because the midfield players aren’t quite functioning and in-form, like Ryan Gravenberch who was brilliant last season. When you play that number 10 position, you have to be certain what’s behind you just to be a little more relaxed.“There’s clear talent there with Wirtz, I love watching him receive the ball, but he’s not quite ready.
