Al-Hilal Manager Explains Decision to Omit Darwin Nunez from Squad
Al-Hilal's head coach Simone Inzaghi has explained the tough decision to exclude former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez from the club's 25-man Saudi Pro League squad for the second half of the 2025-26 season, following the arrival of Karim Benzema.[1][2][3]
Saudi Pro League rules limit teams to registering only eight foreign players born before 2003 in their squads. Nunez, who joined Al-Hilal from Liverpool last summer for around £46.1 million plus add-ons, has scored seven goals in 23 matches but was dropped alongside former Arsenal defender Pablo Mari to make room for Benzema, signed from Al-Ittihad in the winter window.[2][3]
Inzaghi acknowledged the difficulty: "The decision was not easy, but that's part of a coach's responsibilities. Every day, and even during training sessions, I am faced with numerous decisions." He praised both players, stating, "Nunez and Pablo are good players. I want them available for all competitions, but we are aware of the limitations regarding foreign player registrations."[2][3]
The coach noted time constraints prevented registering Marcos Leonardo, who was born in Saudi Arabia, forcing the tough call. "I informed the players excluded in a calm manner," Inzaghi added.[2][3]
While sidelined for league action, Nunez remains eligible for the AFC Champions League. He responded emphatically, scoring a brace in a 2-1 win over Al Wahda, then staring toward the owners' box in a pointed message.[3]
Inzaghi hailed Benzema: "Everyone recognizes Benzema. He is an exceptional champion... We are pleased to have him—his impact is felt in every aspect."[2]
The move raises concerns for Nunez's international future, potentially jeopardizing his spot in Uruguay's 2026 World Cup squad under Marcelo Bielsa due to limited playing time.[4]
