Al-Hilal previously did business with Hughes directly when he negotiated the sale of Darwin Nunez from Liverpool to the Saudi club last summerHughes, 46, joined Liverpool in the summer of 2024 following Jurgen Klopp’s departure, selected by Fenway Sports Group to rebuild the club’s football operations structure. Both he and FSG’s CEO of Football, Michael Edwards, signed three-year contracts upon arrival — deals that are set to expire in 2027.Reports from the Telegraph have indicated that 2027 represents a definitive endpoint for the current leadership group, with neither Edwards nor Hughes currently showing signs of extending. And it seems that at the end of his Reds contract, he could well sign for Al-Hilal.Saudi sports journalist Ahmad Alajlan has reported on X.“It has been decided that Thursday will be the date for signing the acquisition agreement by Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal for Al Hilal club at a rate of 70%, and the signing ceremony will be held at Kingdom Arena Stadium in the presence of PIF Governor Yasser Al-Rumayyan and a delegation from the Fund and a delegation from Kingdom Holding Company.”“Al-Hilal will announce, through the new owner Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal, the signing of the Scottish “Richard Hughes” to take on the role of the club’s sporting director.”It should be noted that reports of a fully agreed deal remain disputed.

The Telegraph reported in April that no contact had been made between Al-Hilal and Liverpool, and that Hughes is simply one of three names on Al-Hilal’s shortlist for the role.
