Chelsea will give Premier League champions Liverpool a guard of honour on Sunday, sparking memories of when the fixture got heated a few years ago.

Liverpool travel to Stamford Bridge as champions this weekend, having won the league title with four matches to spare.

The Blues have confirmed they will respect their rivals' achievement with a guard of honour, marking the second time they will have lined up for Liverpool in five years.

Chelsea hosted a jubilant Liverpool side in 2020, on the day the Reds were due to hoist the Premier League trophy aloft.

Ex-Chelsea and now Coventry City manager Frank Lampard ended up in a furious touchline spat with Jurgen Klopp.

During the 2019/20 season, due to the Covid 19 pandemic, fans could not enter stadiums, meaning players and managers were a lot more audible to supporters at home.

After a free-kick was awarded to Liverpool, the Blues manager voiced his frustrations.

“It’s not a f***ing foul,” said Lampard which prompted a response from Klopp who raised his arms.

“I’m not asking you,” continued Lampard, while the German shouted a loud ‘Hey’ in annoyance.

“F*** off you as well,” shouted Lampard.

“Only league title you've ever won and you're f****** giving it the big 'un… f*** off,” shouted Lampard.

As a player, Lampard won three Premier League trophies.

Klopp, standing with his hands in pocket, replied: “Calm down, calm down.”

Lampard was then left slightly red-faced as Trent Alexander-Arnold put the resulting free-kick in the top corner on Liverpool's way to a 5-3 win.

Speaking about the incident in an interview with The Optus Sport Football Podcast in December 2022, Lampard said: “I've got to be careful to say that I'd never do it again because if I do you can replay this.

“I regret my wording, I don't regret my passion and I probably regret there were no fans in the stadium to drown out the noise because these things do happen and we see them.”

Liverpool’s league season may have concluded that night, but Chelsea were still fighting for top four.

“When I see another manager, I appreciate the passion and I understand the pressures and the reality of that game was that we were fighting to be in the Champions League positions in the last three games or whatever it was,” Lampard said.

“Liverpool were in party mode because they were going to be given the Premier League trophy after the game so it was a pressure game for us and maybe that's just how I am and maybe you've just got to control yourself better at different times."

He continued: “I've got a lot of respect for Jurgen Klopp so after the event you think that it was too much and when up against a manager you respect and maybe you should word it differently but I kind of stand by my passion at the moment it happened. 

“I was defending my team, I felt that at the moment.
