Andoni Iraola has explained Cody Gakpo’s absence from Liverpool’s Champions League opener. Iraola will take charge of his first game in Europe’s elite club competition against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night but without the talismanic winger.

Gakpo was a notable absentee from the Reds’ training session on the eve of their meeting with Diego Simeone’s side with a suspected knock. Iraola confirmed the reason for the Netherlands international’s omission was injury-related but remains hopeful of his return within the next two matches.

“If it’s not for the weekend (against Fulham), it’s for the next one (with Tottenham in the Carabao Cup). “But I think even for the weekend he has a chance.”
