Liverpool forward Rio Ngumoha has made a big splash this week while away with the England national team, but Andoni Iraola will still need to be cautious with him next seasonNew Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola.(Image: Nikki Dyer - Liverpool FC via Getty Images)It won't take long, should England toil for even 45 minutes against Croatia next week, for someone to suggest that Rio Ngumoha should have been in Thomas Tuchel's squad. But it is as inevitable as it is wrong to claim that the Liverpool talent should be at the tournament, even off the back of a brilliant few days for the former Chelsea starlet. First, he was named Player of the Match on his senior Three Lions debut; then, he netted a great goal in a behind-closed-doors game in Miami.Though he left a big impression, having not been named in the preliminary 55-man squad that England put forward for the World Cup, Ngumoha cannot play once the competition gets going, even if someone gets injured and needs replacing. However, that is absolutely the right decision for a 17-year-old who still has lots of developing to do in his game.Ngumoha still has to find more end product in the final third, and he needs to do a lot more defensively to help out his full-back.
At his age, though, that is perfectly normal. That he has the talent to make you think he could achieve both elements fairly quickly and reach an even higher level relatively soon is majorly exciting. But though any whispers that he is impatient for more minutes are understandable to a degree, the approach from Andoni Iraola should not be that much different from Arne Slot next term.Rio Ngumoha controls the ball during an England game.(Image: Rich Storry/Getty Images)Last season, Ngumoha made 29 senior appearances in all competitions, but most of those were cameos off the bench. Next season, things shouldn't look massively different."This year, he played probably more than the club would have expected, in my opinion, with Cody Gakpo not performing to his best," Michael Owen told Liverpool.com this week."With injuries in the wide positions, this enabled Rio to have more game time.
I have been impressed with him, the way he plays, his fearless nature, but as a club, Liverpool can’t expect to rely on such a young talent to deliver week in week out next season."As it stands, Ngumoha is one of three wingers at Liverpool — and it is safe to say he is performing at a higher level than Federico Chiesa, who could depart.
