Image Credits: Imago ImagesFormer Liverpool man Jonjo Shelvey has officially called time on his playing career and stepped straight into management as head coach of ambitious UAE side Arabian Falcons FC.The 34-year-old had a 3-year spell at Anfield under Kenny Dalglish and Brendan Rodgers, having joined the club in 2010 as a teenager.
During his time at Anfield, Shelvey made a total of 69 appearances and found the net seven times. He was part of the Liverpool squad that lifted the League Cup in 2012 and also made it to the FA Cup final that same year.Shelvey had already been turning out for the Dubai-based club this season as a player before making the full-time switch from the pitch to the dugout.Arabian Falcons, a rapidly growing club in the United Arab Emirates’ third tier, confirmed the news with an announcement that Shelvey has signed on as their new manager, bringing an end to a senior career that included spells at Swansea, Newcastle, Nottingham Forest and Burnley, as well as six England caps.Shelvey only joined the Falcons in September and made eight league appearances before deciding the time was right to transition into coaching. The club are co-owned by former Crystal Palace midfielder Jason Puncheon.Speaking to the club after being appointed, he said:“The reason why I chose Arabian Falcons and come to Dubai is probably Harry [Agombar], the previous manager.
I’ve known Harry for a long time, there was an opportunity to come and play here and it felt like one I couldn’t turn down.”“My vision is to be a successful manager; I’ve obviously worked with some great managers in the past throughout my career… to take a little bit from each one and then take a little bit from each one and add my own stamp to it.”“I demand commitment, hard work, sacrifice, and professionalism from my players. if they buy into that, there’s no reason why they can’t go to the top.”With Falcons only being established in 2023, it’s a real chance for Shelvey to build something special and become an icon at the club.
