This Liverpool team needs to fix their problems before this blip turns into more of a crisis.A 2-1 defeat to Manchester United signalled their fourth straight defeat in a game which did not meet the standards expected of the Reds or Arne Slot. The issues with this squad are numerous; annoyingly, it seems that the problems with the defence and squad balance have persisted despite being very apparent with some easy fixes.Join our newsletter for news & smart analysis. But there are other areas where this team are finding it very difficult to keep control, and it is the midfield. While it is not the main problem area, Slot is still making two mistakes which are quite costly to this team, and if he does not change them, he will not find out his best team.Photo by Robbie Jay Barratt – AMA/Getty ImagesAlexis Mac Allister needs to be droppedAlexis Mac Allister has been a brilliant player for Liverpool since he joined from Brighton and Hove Albion in 2023, but this season, he has not been up to scratch, and that performance against United continued to prove it.In the first half of the game, the Argentine registered 13 touches, which is simply not a good enough number for a player of his quality.READ MORE: Florian Wirtz sent clear message to Arne Slot after being dropped to the Liverpool bench yet againThe 26-year-old also won none of his ground duels or completed any of the long balls he served up.His injuries have clearly hindered him this season, however, it is now time for Mac Allister to drop to the bench in favour of a Florian Wirtz or Curtis Jones.Wirtz would be the better fit based on his cameo against the Red Devils, but Jones is not a bad choice. All that matters is that for now, Slot must drop the Argentinian until he finds his fitness and form because it is to the detriment of the team, as he is not controlling the game like he used to.Dominik Szoboszlai needs to remain in midfieldThere is not much more that needs to be said about Dominik Szoboszlai because he is a special player. When looking into his statistics from the United clash, it is clear to see his quality: 88% pass accuracy, six out of seven accurate long balls, 9 crosses attempted, the majority of ground duels won, and the list could go on.While he did start in the midfield for this game, Szoboszlai was moved into the right-back position for much of the second half. This cannot carry on; he has to stay in the midfield. The 24-year-old has incredible versatility, which is a perfect asset to have, but for midfield balance, he has to stick in the centre of the park, where he is most comfortable and able to dictate play.It should not be placed on him to take the reins at a position which is not natural to him. Both of these fixes will just help to redress the balance in the midfield to allow the Reds to perform better than they have for most of the season.
