Liverpool were not at their best against Manchester United, but they were not helped out by VAR deciding not to rule out Benjamin Sesko’s goal on the day.Matheus Cunha opened the scoring for Man Utd after his shot was deflected in off Alexis Mac Allister.Sesko made it 2-0, and after a lengthy VAR review, the goal was given despite images on Sky Sports’ coverage showing it did brush his hand – a decision Arne Slot thinks was wrong. Can someone explain why this was allowed to stand?

Apparently United are allowed to handle balls into the net now 😤 Photo by James Gill – Danehouse/Getty Images Arne Slot reacts to Benjamin Sesko’s handball in Manchester United vs LiverpoolSpeaking to the media after Sunday afternoon’s tie, the Liverpool manager was asked if he had any complaints about the incident. He said: “Yeah, if it is a touch it is never a lot of course. If it was a touch, it should have been disallowed.

I want to focus on how we conceded that second goal, because that’s where we can do better.”By the letter of the law, if the ball made any contact with Sesko’s hand, it should have been ruled out.And that is the view of former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg, who spoke to Rousing The Kop about the handball goal in Man Utd vs Liverpool. He said: “My impression was that it was a good goal scored by Benjamin Sesko when he scored Manchester United’s second goal. As always, the goal will be checked by VAR.“When you slow it down, the ball brushes the arm of Sesko before immediately scoring and therefore the VAR Stuart Attwell should have recommended a review to cancel the goal.“The only thing I can think is that Attwell does not have enough evidence to clearly see the ball touch the fingers, but replays do show the hand change movement when the ball hits it making it look like a touch.“According to the laws of the game the goal should not have stood.”Had the goal been ruled out, Liverpool very well could have won the tie or at least secured a draw. But they instead lost to Man Utd and are now six points adrift of sixth with three tough games against Chelsea, Aston Villa and Manchester United to come.Join Our NewsletterReceive a digest of our best Liverpool content each week direct to your mailbox
