Arne Slot‘s growing injury and absence list, especially in his forward line, means he now has no choice but to start trusting the depth of his Liverpool squad, or what’s left of it. As is stands, Slot has five players sidelined with injury, a further two under fitness clouds, one absent due to an international tournament, and another suspended for the next match.

The remaining 10 senior regulars have been used more sparingly, due to Slot’s selection or, in other cases, injury, which has not escaped attention considering Liverpool’s fluctuating form. Liverpool’s squad depth is being tested, which is a fault of the summer window, but Slot now has no choice other than to give those he has overlooked a chance while he awaits any January reinforcements.

“Because if we had to play with the 13 outfield players available with any Premier League experience – because we have more available of course – and we have to go to Arsenal away on Tuesday again after so many games played (if Liverpool progressed)… “Maybe people can understand a little bit better why I made that lineup against Palace – which wasn’t good for me, but it was another decision I’ve made for the team.” Quite the damning verdict on the depth of the squad, but Slot’s decision “for the team” must now be to have total confidence in the full list of players he has available to him, and not just for 10-minute cameos. Chiesa, for one, has proven he is deserving of that opportunity.
