“It was a big decision, to be fair, but I think the timing was right for me as well,” he explained. “I was there 10 years, started when I was 16 in the academy and all the way through.

“I think the timing in the end was actually right for me. “But the other thing, the frustration for me was when I saw that, people think it’s straightforward that I just leave.

“That I play well and I just go to Liverpool and say ‘right, I’m going to go’ – it doesn’t work like that, that was more so the frustration for me. “Obviously I want to be playing every week, but that’s just not the way it was.
