Ever since he arrived at Liverpool in 2017, Mohamed Salah has been a figure the fans could always depend on to find the net.In every one of his eight full seasons at Anfield, Salah has finished as the club’s leading scorer. After what many saw as his best campaign yet in 2024/25, there were expectations that he would carry that form into another strong season. There is still time for him to turn things around. But so far this year, with 10 matches played, the 33-year-old does not look quite like himself.Salah was not the only one who struggled against Chelsea, but it was another performance where he looked a long way off his best.Despite growing concerns among fans about Salah’s potential permanent decline, former teammate Daniel Sturridge has offered a different perspective, suggesting the Liverpool legend’s career may not be over just yet.Mohamed Salah is still getting used to new teammates, according to Daniel SturridgePhoto by Richard Martin-Roberts – CameraSport via Getty ImagesAcross his time at Anfield, Salah has featured in several different forward lines, but his role as the focal point of the attack has never changed. The Egyptian winger was always the standout, even when sharing the pitch with players like Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino. As those teammates moved on, Salah then headlined attacks including names like Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota. This season brings another shift.

With Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak leading the line, Sturridge thinks it is this adjustment that is behind Salah’s recent drop in form.He explained it on Sky Sports: “I’m not worried because I think for me it’s him trying to understand how he can play with natural strikers and get his chances.“He has dropped off in terms of statistics and the level of performances we’re used to seeing from him, but what I will say is I do believe he’s trying to figure out ‘how do I play with these two strikers?’“He’s worked with a false nine effectively in Luis Diaz who wasn’t an out-and-out striker. Then you look at now, he’s working with actual centre-forwards.

The space isn’t there and teams are playing deeper.”Arne Slot faces big call over best Liverpool front threeWhile there is something to be said for Sturridge’s view on why Salah has struggled this season, it does not do much to ease the frustration among fans. What makes things more complicated is that Arne Slot has still not settled on a preferred attacking set-up. And until he does, it is hard to see where consistency will come from.READ MORE: Jamie Redknapp urges Arne Slot to stick with one man at right-back for LiverpoolSalah used to play with Mane and Firmino almost every week, and even when those players changed, the system around him stayed pretty much the same.
