Darwin Nunez has already made his feelings clear on a potential return to Liverpool after surprise links have emerged of a potential shock free transfer following his fallout with Saudi club Al-Hilal10:05, 08 Jun 2026Updated 10:12, 08 Jun 2026Darwin Nunez has made his thoughts clear on a Liverpool return(Image: Getty Images)Darwin Nunez is believed to be fully open to a shock transfer return to Liverpool after reports suggested he could be allowed to leave Al-Hilal as a free agent.Nunez has fallen in the depth chart at the Saudi club, which signed Karim Benzema and promising striker Mohamed Kader Meite, who are both ahead of Nunez. The club also has Brazilian striker Marcos Leonardo and former Barcelona star Malcom in the position. The following moves saw Al-Hilal take the drastic decision to omit Nunez from the squad, while having too many foreign players — the league has a limit on how many teams can have — with him missing half of the season.

If he is to be released, he is sure to have a number of suitors, with the player already admitting he'd like to return to Liverpool. Nunez left the club just one year ago.Back in March, Nunez told AUFTV : "I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss them [the people of Liverpool].

The truth is, they made me feel very welcome, and my family too."During some difficult times I went through personally, the people always gave me that affection, that support, and that was very important to me, and obviously I miss Liverpool."Mundo Deportivo reported that Nunez could leave Al-Hilal for free, wth a contract termination by mutual consent potentially coming this summer.Nunez is expected to transfer away from the Saudi Pro League this summer(Image: Photo by Nigel French/Sportsphoto/Allstar via Getty Images)Nunez has been linked to Barcelona and Chelsea, but could be favoring a return to Liverpool, where he would have an open spot. While Nunez could not reclaim his No. 9 jersey, which is now taken by Alexander Isak, he could provide competition for the Reds striker, with the team needing to add a player at the position.Hugo Ekitike is likely to miss much of the 2026/27 season after tearing his Achilles tendon in April, an injury that regularly takes more than nine months to recover from.Nunez could be signed on a short-term contract, on a "prove it" kind of deal, to see if he can earn a longer one with the team, or potentially move on at the end of the year once Ekitike returns.Liverpool could also look to sign Nunez on loan, something Saudi clubs have been open to doing to get foreign players off their books.Liverpool.com says: If Darwin Nunez is available to be signed on loan or as a free agent, it has to be something that the Reds consider.Selling Nunez was certainly not the wrong decision; he struggled greatly during his time at Anfield, mostly with his finishing inside the box. However, he's a perfect fit for Andoni Iraola's style of play and would bring back a spark to the Reds that they were missing last season.
