Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai has discussed his role in the team moving forward, making it clear that he will feature where necessary for Andoni Iraola this seasonDominik Szoboszlai has been discussing his position at Liverpool(Image: (Photo by Melissa Tamez/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images))Dominik Szoboszlai has claimed he will play wherever Andoni Iraola needs him to for Liverpool, but he also added that he would certainly prefer to play in midfield moving forward. It comes after a campaign that was filled with compromises for the Hungarian international, with injury issues in the team forcing Arne Slot to consider the options at his disposal for key positions on the pitch. Injuries at right-back were most prevalent, and despite the impressive displays in midfield, it was decided that Szoboszlai would be the best fit to fill in for the short-term.With his comfort on the ball, the 25-year-old could better replicate the ability of Trent Alexander-Arnold, who left Liverpool last summer for Real Madrid in a move that left a sour taste for all involved with the Reds.Szoboszlai was certainly capable of featuring in that position, but in placing him on the flank, the team also took away some of his best attributes in the final third and in front of goal.Since the end of that difficult campaign, there has been a switch in approach and head coach, with Andoni Iraola now in charge and looking for change, but some things have unfortunately stayed the same so far, especially when it comes to issues at right back.Unless Liverpool reinforces that position in the summer months, there is a chance that someone like Szoboszlai will have to take up the unorthodox role moving forward. While the 25-year-old said he would do it, he made it clear that he has a preferred role when speaking after his side's defeat to Leeds United in preseason.“Last season I played a lot of positions," he claimed.
If he [Iraola] wants to play right-back, I will play right back."Dominik Szoboszlai of Liverpool FC speaks during a press conference in Chicago(Image: Nikki Dyer/Liverpool FC via Getty Images)It's a clear message that, while he is willing to do what it takes to make sure the team wins, there is also a clear desire to play more in midfield this season. That follows a warning from Steven Gerrard earlier this year, who had told Slot to put Szoboszlai in midfield instead of right-back, before his eventual exit in the summer.Speaking to TNT Sports about Szoboszlai's position, the former Liverpool captain said: "He's always in and around the box. His ball striking is phenomenal."His timing and his technique, and he hits it with so much venom.
He must be an absolute nightmare for the goalkeeper."People are going away now talking about his performance because he's exciting and he's entertaining, but he's in his proper position. Keep him in his proper position.
