The 48-year-old's death occurred at a level crossing in the Austrian city of Salzburg, local officials have revealed.Manninger was alone in his vehicle when the collision happened, with the train hitting the car at around 8:20am local time on Thursday morning.

However, it was too late, with Manninger having been pronounced dead shortly after.Gerhard Kronreif from the public prosecutor's office told Austrian outlet Kronen Zeitung: "Due to the type of vehicle, it's possible to precisely analyse the electronic data – and thus the driver's behaviour."A statement from Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg read: "We mourn our former goalkeeper Alexander Manninger, who tragically lost his life in a traffic accident.
