Keith Hackett Reacts to Bobby Thomas Incident in Coventry Loss vs Birmingham: ‘He Deserved It’

Former PGMOL general manager and ex-FIFA referee Keith Hackett has backed the decision to send off Coventry City defender Bobby Thomas during their 3-2 defeat to Birmingham City on Sunday.[1]

Coventry, the Championship table toppers, traveled to St Andrew’s aiming to rebound from a loss to Ipswich Town and a draw with Charlton Athletic. Birmingham, managed by Chris Davies and sitting mid-table, secured a crucial home win in a heated Midlands derby.[1]

Controversy erupted in the closing stages when Thomas was dismissed by referee James Linington following an altercation with Birmingham defender Phil Neumann. Footage showed Thomas kicking out at Neumann after a clearance from the penalty area and raising his left hand, appearing to strike the back of Neumann's head.[1]

Thomas offered no protests despite Neumann's dramatic reaction as he left the pitch. Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Hackett affirmed the call: “When a player raises his hands on an opponent and attempts to strike him, then he deserves to get sent off.” He added, “I am not surprised that the Coventry City player made no attempt to verbally appeal to the referee. It looks like a correct red card for me.”[1]

Hackett, a respected voice in refereeing circles, emphasized that such violent conduct warrants immediate ejection, underscoring the referee's authority in maintaining order during intense matches.[1]
