Former Liverpool midfielder Fabinho is weighing up his future as his contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad expires in June, and he has openly expressed a desire to return to European football.

Fabinho, who joined Liverpool in 2018, became a crucial holding midfielder in Jürgen Klopp’s side, helping the club win every major trophy available during the German’s tenure. After five years at Anfield, however, his performances declined, prompting Liverpool to overhaul their midfield and sanction his move to Al-Ittihad.

In Saudi Arabia, Fabinho has recovered his form and even forced his way back into the Brazil national team, featuring for his country for the first time in two years during the November international break. Despite his satisfaction with life at Al-Ittihad, the approaching end of his deal means he is now carefully studying his options.

Speaking about his situation, Fabinho noted that this is the first time he will reach the end of a contract without a club already having bought him. He stressed that he is not in a hurry to decide but accepts that in the coming weeks he must evaluate possibilities with his representative.

The 30-year-old underlined that he is “very happy” at Al-Ittihad and must take that into account, yet admitted he would like to return to Europe, either now or in the future, to experience “new things.” He highlighted particular interest in a comeback to Spain, pointing out that he only played around 20 minutes there previously and still has the “illusion” of returning to La Liga.

Ultimately, Fabinho insists he is calm about the decision and will choose the option that is best for both his family and himself, leaving the door wide open for a European move this summer.
