Liverpool’s pursuit of Marc Guehi has taken a concerning turn after fresh insight from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano cast serious doubt on a January move for the Crystal Palace captain.[1] The 25-year-old England defender has been a long-term target for Liverpool, who came extremely close to signing him on deadline day last summer before the deal collapsed when Palace failed to secure a replacement.[1]
Since then, the landscape has shifted significantly. Manchester City have emerged as major contenders for Guehi’s signature as they look to cover injuries to key centre-backs Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias.[1] Palace boss Oliver Glasner, who had previously insisted Guehi would not be sold mid-season, recently softened his stance, admitting the club would now consider a January sale if a suitable financial offer arrives and the player is open to the move.[1]
Romano revealed on his YouTube channel that City are now actively negotiating with Crystal Palace over a deal for Guehi, describing the situation as “moving” and confirming that the defender’s exit this month is a real possibility.[1] However, he stressed that an agreement is not yet done or agreed, leaving room for twists in the coming weeks.[1]
Crucially for Liverpool, Romano reported that the Anfield club still hold an interest in Guehi but are internally pessimistic about completing a transfer in January, believing it will be “difficult” to pull off.[1] He urged observers not to discount Liverpool or Bayern Munich, both of whom remain in the frame and are closely tracking the situation, particularly with a view to the summer window.[1]
Romano’s update therefore paints a worrying picture for Liverpool: Manchester City are pushing hard to close a deal now, while Liverpool, despite having “the player in their hands” last summer, may be forced to wait and risk being beaten to his signature.[1]
