Image Credits: Imago ImagesFormer Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian San Miguel has announced he will retire from professional football after Real Betis’ final game of the 2025/26 season.The 39-year-old joined Betis in the summer of 2024 after leaving Liverpool at the end of his contract, bringing his five-year spell at Anfield to a close.Although he was offered a contract extension, Adrian opted to return to Betis, where he came through the ranks earlier in his career.This season, he has made just five appearances for the La Liga side as a backup option, but will now bow out of the game at the end of the campaign.



He posted on X: “I’m retiring in the place where I belong 💚 Thank you, béticos!”Adrián made a valuable contribution during Liverpool’s successful period. He arrived on Merseyside in August 2019 from West Ham United, joining a squad that had just won the Champions League.His impact was immediate.

Just four days after signing on a free transfer, he made his debut when Alisson Becker was forced off injured during a 4-1 win over Norwich City on the opening night of the 2019/20 Premier League season.Five days later, he played a key role in Liverpool’s UEFA Super Cup triumph, saving Tammy Abraham’s penalty in a shootout victory over Chelsea after a 2-2 draw in Istanbul.With Alisson sidelined, Adrián also helped Liverpool to a run of seven straight Premier League wins before the Brazilian returned in October.He went on to make 18 appearances in his first season, including 11 in the Premier League as Liverpool ended their 30-year wait for a league title in dominant fashion.Further appearances followed in 2020/21, and he was again involved as Liverpool beat Manchester City to win the FA Community Shield at the start of the 2022/23 season.Across his final years, he remained an important squad member, regularly part of the matchday setup and providing experienced cover in the goalkeeping unit.
