Liverpool fans have reached the end of their tether with Arne Slot as one of the worst seasons in the last decade nears its conclusion. After losing to PSG in midweek, the Reds will end the 2025/26 campaign without any silverware or even a cup final appearance. However, trophies or a lack of a title challenge are not the main issues. Instead, it is what Arne Slot has done to the fanbase over the last 12 months.
Yet Liverpool, for some reason, want to stick with their manager. Rate Arne Slot’s second season as Liverpool head coach Can anyone make a serious argument for higher than a C? 😶 Photo Credit: Getty Images/Carl Recine Liverpool plan to stick with Arne SlotSpeaking to The Athletic FC podcast, David Ornstein, a reliable journalist, shared a rather perplexing update on Slot in the aftermath of the PSG defeat. He said: “All of our information is that FSG, the ownership, the sporting hierarchy at Liverpool – they intend to stick with Arne Slot.“From the conversations I’ve had – even if there’s no Champions League football – that’s the intention.”Why?
Liverpool fans have always been quick to back their managers in difficult circumstances, and the fact that Slot won the league last season has been repeatedly mooted as a reason why he should stay. But let’s be honest, does anyone, apart from those close to the club who fear criticising anything they do, really think he has shown enough to prove he should be kept in a job beyond the summer?Mitigating factors for the decline in 2025/26 include injury issues and an influx of new signings. But at what point will the blame finally be put on the manager? Liverpool fans don’t need to see their team challenging for the title every season; they don’t even need to win trophies every year. All supporters want is to see their team playing with passion, in a clear style, with some signs that there is going to be an improvement moving forward.Yet with just over a month of the campaign left to play, Liverpool look just as bad under Slot as they did at the back end of 2025.He has given fans zero hope that things will get better next term, and it does feel like the Reds are now going to waste a summer transfer window and the start of 2026/27 on a manager who will probably need to be removed from his post by mid-October anyway.I hope I am wrong, and Liverpool are able to turn things around, but I have yet to see anything from Slot to show he has the ability to get the club back to an acceptable level.Join Our NewsletterReceive a digest of our best Liverpool content each week direct to your mailbox
