Florian Wirtz has come under heavy criticism since his £116m move to Liverpool. The Reds had a simply sensational summer in the transfer market and based on how much quality they added to the side, many expected them to take the league by storm. That has not been the case, though, and almost every new signing, bar Hugo Ekitike, has struggled since pulling on the famous Red shirt.Wirtz in particular has had a bit of a torrid start, with the German failing to register a goal or an assist, while also having to deal with rival fans and the media scrutinising every small thing he does wrong. He has certainly not been as bad as has been made out, but overall, he still has not reached the levels that he should be given how much Liverpool spent on him.Germany legend Rudi Voller has also been quick to jump to Wirtz’s defence in recent weeks, and the former Bayer Leverkusen sporting director has shared why he thinks the 22-year-old has had a slow start.Photo by BURAK BASTURK/Middle East Images/AFP via Getty ImagesFlorian Wirtz is no longer the main manDespite being so young, Wirtz has firmly established himself as one of Germany’s best players, with this proven by the uproar that he caused when he decided to leave the Bundesliga. So far, though, Liverpool fans have not quite seen what all the hype is about, with their new number seven struggling to impact games the same way he did back in his homeland.Voller believes there is a clear reason for this and he admitted that he noticed it straight away when watching the Reds in action this season. But he isn’t played to in the way he was used to at Leverkusen or with the national team.

Florian isn’t like that.”He concluded by saying: “He’s not only an extraordinary footballer, he also has a great character. He also has incredible running stats.

He will assert himself.”Liverpool need to help Florian Wirtz out moreAlthough Wirtz is no longer the main man, there is a strong chance he could be in the near future as players like Mohamed Salah will not be around for much longer. But for that to happen, he needs to dictate games more and be the orchestrator, something that can only happen if he is given the ball.So far, his teammates have also been underperforming and have not been able to give Wirtz the ball as much as they perhaps should be, meaning that he is having to come a lot deeper to collect it.In turn, this means he cannot be as threatening in the final third, hence why he is yet to make a meaningful contribution. Of course, Wirtz can also do more himself and he is also partly to blame, but until he can get on the ball more, then his chances of thriving reduce significantly.
