German football legend and sporting director Rudi Völler has spoken out about Florian Wirtz’s early struggles at Liverpool, revealing how the young playmaker is coping with criticism following his high-profile £116 million move from Bayer Leverkusen. Wirtz, who enjoyed a stellar career in the Bundesliga, has faced intense scrutiny after failing to register a goal or assist in his first several appearances for the Reds, prompting calls from pundits like Jamie Carragher and Wayne Rooney for him to be dropped from the starting lineup.

Völler, who has closely followed Wirtz’s career, insists the 22-year-old is handling the pressure with maturity and resilience. “Florian shouldn’t let himself get carried away,” Völler said. “He’s playing in a new league and a new club. These are normal adjustment problems. Almost every professional has them.” Völler emphasized that Wirtz’s struggles are not unique and are part of the process of adapting to a different style of football and a new team environment.

The former World Cup winner also pointed out that Wirtz’s role at Liverpool is markedly different from his time at Leverkusen, where he was the focal point of the attack and consistently played into. At Liverpool, Wirtz is not receiving the same level of service and is being asked to contribute in different ways, which has affected his output. “He does an incredible amount of work, runs a lot, makes many sprints, and also goes deep,” Völler noted. “But he isn’t played to in the way he was used to.”

Völler remains confident that Wirtz will overcome these challenges and eventually prove his worth at Anfield, urging patience and support as the talented midfielder continues to integrate into his new surroundings.
