Liverpool could not have made a better decision when choosing the manager to lead the club into the post-Jurgen Klopp era.Plenty of candidates were put forward in an attempt to continue the good times at Anfield, but arguably none could have emulated what Arne Slot has done since his appointment. As good as the Dutchman is, however, he was not the person many envisaged being in the dugout at Anfield once Klopp called time on his Liverpool career. For a while, it had looked as though legendary former captain Steven Gerrard was the heir-apparent to the German.Gerrard led Rangers to an undefeated league title, and a move to Aston Villa was seen as the next logical step before a return to Liverpool. However, things fell flat at Villa Park, with Gerrard’s subsequent move to Al Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia seemingly ending all hope of him ever becoming Liverpool manager. The Scouser now looks poised to make a return to British football, though, and supporters may be hoping that the Gerrard fairy-tale could yet come true against the odds.

Settle in and do well back in Glasgow, and doors will open for Gerrard again. The 45-year-old need only look at his former England colleague, Frank Lampard, whose reputation took a similar battering following disappointing spells with Chelsea and Everton. But Lampard has refused to throw the towel in, got back on the horse and now has Coventry unbeaten, top of the Championship and playing some brilliant football. If – and it is still a big if – Gerrard can have a similar renaissance back at the club of his biggest managerial successes – talk may start once again of a future return to Liverpool.Gerrard has years to perfect Liverpool returnWith Liverpool clearly very happy with Slot, the job at Anfield is unlikely to be available for some years.Given his start to life with the Reds, there is a chance that the Dutchman ‘does a Klopp’ and stays for close to a decade.Frank Lampard's Coventry in the Championship this season:▪️9 games▪️0 defeats▪️27 goals scored▪️12 goals in their last three games▪️Top of the league Cooking 🔥 pic.twitter.com/B9MVFyVtc6— ESPN UK (@ESPNUK) October 6, 2025 View Tweet That is rare in modern football, however, and it feels more likely that Slot will be in situ for five or six years at Liverpool. While he may have previously been ruled out in the eyes of many, Gerrard’s impending return to Rangers could put the former captain back in the mix once Slot does leave.Do well at Ibrox, then perhaps get another Villa type move – and this time nail it – and there will almost certainly be calls for Gerrard at Liverpool when the time comes. But for Gerrard, his ultimate dream of leading Liverpool to a Premier League title may be about to be given a new lease of life.
