Arne Slot has offered a positive injury update on Hugo Ekitike ahead of Liverpool’s FA Cup tie against Barnsley. The French striker, a key summer signing, has missed Liverpool’s last two matches after picking up a minor hamstring issue before the recent trip to Fulham, where he was ruled out with what was later confirmed as a non-serious problem.[3]
Ekitike has been one of the few consistent bright spots in a difficult season for Liverpool, especially during a standout December in which he scored back-to-back braces against Leeds United and Brighton, then followed up with a decisive winner away to Tottenham Hotspur. However, after those heroics, he played in subsequent games against Wolves and Leeds without adding to his goal contributions before the setback occurred.[3]
Having now sat out clashes with Fulham and Arsenal, Ekitike’s availability for the Barnsley FA Cup tie remains slightly uncertain but hopeful. Slot explained that the medical team and staff will “do everything” to have the striker available for Monday’s game, suggesting he is close to a return and could provide a timely boost to Liverpool’s attacking options.[3]
Slot also spoke about his wider selection approach for the FA Cup. Reflecting on last season, when he was criticised for fielding a weakened side that exited the competition in the third round against Plymouth Argyle, he admitted he had to make tough rotation choices amid a packed schedule and multiple competitions. Although the FA Cup has always been important, competing simultaneously in the League Cup, Champions League, and Premier League forced compromises. This year, with Liverpool already out of the League Cup, Slot hinted at a stronger emphasis on the FA Cup, with Ekitike’s potential return seen as a significant lift for the team.[3]
