Liverpool’s form this season has shown that there are issues in multiple positions on the pitch.During the summer transfer window, the Reds had strengthened in most areas but obviously missed out on Marc Guehi as the last piece of their defensive puzzle, as the deal with Crystal Palace fell through. This became an issue this season as the performances of Ibrahima Konate have taken a dip from his usual world-class form, which fans are so used to.But it is not the only problem area as the left wing position was not added to during the summer, with Cody Gakpo receiving a new contract and Rio Ngumoha offered a longer deal. While Gakpo has been consistent and Ngumoha has shown his talent, the loss of Luis Diaz on the left-hand side has shown that Liverpool require a change there next summer.Photo by Liverpool FC/Liverpool FC via Getty ImagesThe Luis Diaz transfer has negatively affected the left wing; a change is needed in the transfer windowIt was a great idea to give the Dutch winger a new contract; however, in the recent games, he has been average, and having a 17-year-old prospect as the backup is not good enough for a top team like Liverpool.Diaz was perfect for the Reds in that he offered pace, creative thinking, and an ability to be decisive in games, but there is a clear lack of that on the left flank.READ MORE: Porto have a new left-footed Luis Diaz coming through who Liverpool should be watching closelyWhile Hugo Ekitike can play on that side, he cannot necessarily be our starting left winger, especially when he is more suited to being a striker. If Slot is going to persist with two wingers, the January or summer transfer window should see a change in focus, while a defender should be a top priority, so should the left-hand side. This is vital to the success of the team, given that most of the service in recent games has been down that side, which has isolated Mohamed Salah from most of the play, and that cannot continue to let down the team in front of goal. The reason this issue was overlooked is that Ekitike and Florian Wirtz were brought in to aid that side of the pitch. But just like Ekitike, Wirtz is not a natural winger and he has shown that he is uncomfortable on that side of the team.An out-and-out winger is crucial, and if something is not done, this poor form will likely continue.Rio Ngumoha still needs time to developRio is obviously one of the most talented players on the books at the club, and he will get more chances to show why he is one for the future, but he cannot start regularly. When facing Southampton, he did his best, but it was not a good enough performance to stake his claim in the team.Even during cameos in recent games he has struggled to get a foothold, which is also down to the way the team have been performing, but placing him in a starting position right now clearly would not work.More game time in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup is perfect for the young star to develop, but having him as the backup in this current iteration of the team is not the answer to Liverpool’s problems.
