Liverpool’s clash against Manchester City was set to be a big game for so many reasons, with the Reds the first to welcome City since the Premier League found them guilty of breaching a plethora of financial rules. But while it was massive in the grander scheme of things, it was also an important occasion for individuals in the Liverpool team. One of those most in need of a good performance was Ryan Gravenberch, who came in after Dominik Szoboszlai was ruled out with a hamstring problem. Carragher delighted by Ryan Gravenberch against CityIt was a big blow for Liverpool to lose Szoboszlai before the City game, but it offered a chance for Gravenberch to change the narrative around him.In the early part of the game at least, he went about doing that, performing at least two trademark turns in the middle of midfield which left Carragher in awe.“That’s exactly what this crowd needed,” the former Liverpool defender said on commentary for Sky Sports after seeing Gravenberch sliding through early on.
“He’s been one of the fall guys under the new manager, he’s been left out, but he’s in today. Brilliant start from him, getting that ball on the turn and running right at Man City’s back four.”Gravenberch’s good form didn’t stop there, and he showed another lovely piece of play minutes later, driving through midfield to set the Reds on the attack.
“He’s been a fantastic player for Liverpool, but he hasn’t started well under this new manager, but he’s certainly started well today.”Another former Liverpool player, Stephen Warnock, was also impressed, commenting for BBC Sport: “Lovely play from Ryan Gravenberch as he rolled away from Enzo Fernandez. He delayed and then the attack fizzled out.”It remains to be seen how long Szoboszlai will be missing, but with Gravenberch doing well on international duty, he seems to have brought that form back with him to Merseyside as well.
