Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has admitted that there’s no way his former club should be able to finish as high as fourth in the Premier League this season. The Reds have had a terrible defence of their title under Arne Slot, ceding the crown to Arsenal ahead of the final weekend of the season. And as they prepare to take on Brentford at Anfield, Carragher has claimed that the fact Liverpool are as high as they are may mean the Premier League is far weaker than in recent seasons. 13 Premier League defeats would be more than Brendan Rodgers’ last full season!!Credit: Winslow Townson/Getty Images Liverpool do not deserve to be fourth – CarragherThe Premier League has been tighter than ever this season, with more than half of the division in contention to play in Europe for most of the campaign. While that has led to many lauding the standard of football across the board, the fact that Liverpool have been as poor as they are and are still in line for a top-four finish says something different.Speaking to Sky Sports, Carragher has admitted that while he’s not sure of the answer on that, what he does know is that Liverpool will be delighted to see the back of 2025/26.“I still can’t believe Liverpool are actually fifth in the league and they could actually finish fourth,” he said.
“Because you’d imagine Aston Villa have enjoyed themselves [after winning the Europa League] and Man City might beat them on the last day.” Should Arne Slot drop Mohamed Salah from the squad to face Brentford? 👀 A sour end could be in store… Photo by Michael Regan/Getty Images READ MORE: Florian Wirtz reveals whether he has a problem with Arne Slot after ‘liking’ Mohamed Salah’s recent post“But to think Liverpool could finish fourth or fifth, this season, when you think of how they’ve performed and the results that they’ve had, I mean, I don’t know if it shows how strong the Premier League is or how poor it is. “If it means the strength in the Premier League, you know, from those Champions League positions right down to the bottom is as strong as it’s been for a long time or maybe some of our top teams are just not at the races at all and Liverpool being one of them.
So I’m not quite sure.“But from Liverpool’s point of view, it’s been a really poor season,” Carragher added. “Myself, I think I probably speak for a lot of Liverpool supporters to say that we just can’t wait to get this last game done, get out the way and try and look forward to next season.”There’s still one more hurdle for Liverpool to get over before they can consign this year to history, but if they do manage to beat Brentford and Villa lose at City, they will have secured a top four finish for the ninth time in 10 seasons.
