Image Credits: Imago ImagesFormer Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah has spoken about his decision to join Bayer Leverkusen, hinting that he has no regrets over the move. The 23-year-old completed a £35m transfer to the Bundesliga side last summer after progressing through Liverpool’s academy and making 58 senior appearances.Quansah was also part of the England squad that won the European Under-21 Championship, beating Germany in the final.
His transfer was the third deal between the clubs that summer, following Liverpool’s signings of Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong.Newcastle United had previously shown interest in Quansah as part of a proposed deal involving Anthony Gordon, but Liverpool rejected the approach. The defender played a role in Liverpool’s 2024 League Cup triumph and made 13 league appearances during the 2024/25 campaign as Arne Slot’s side won the Premier League.Quansah signed a five-year contract with Leverkusen in search of regular minutes and has since made 38 appearances for the German club, scoring four goals.“It was the management and the way they approached me because they had a very clear plan of what they’d been watching and everything they saw from me,” he told Sky Sports News about his move.“They had so much detail in terms of what they’d seen of me, the potential they thought I could live up to and it matched up to what I was thinking as well. I felt like I could play at the top level, the Bundesliga’s a top league and being able to play in the Champions League and play top games, like the semi-final [DFB Pokal] next Wednesday against Bayern, it’s a massive, massive game.”Expanding on his departure from the Reds, he said: “I think you just have maybe a gut feeling.
Sometimes you can’t think about it too much and listen to too many people to be honest, because you can listen to a few things and get persuaded.“I really took time on the decision, I took time to myself to reflect on everything that was going on at Liverpool, everything I thought I could’ve done better and what was best for my career really, that was it.“When the Leverkusen guys came in and like I say, I saw everything that they wanted – I think, from that moment, I knew it was the right decision.”Liverpool included a buy-back clause in the deal with Bayer Leverkusen, although it is not expected to be activated before the summer of 2027.
