According to reports which emerged on Monday, Jeff Bezos could soon be closer to having active involvement in Liverpool Football Club.It was revealed last month that the Amazon founder was approached by a consortium led by Amit Bhatia with intentions of purchasing a significant minority stake in the Merseyside club in a proposed deal which would value LFC at more than $6bn (£4.45bn).Those plans now appear to be closer to fruition, with Sky News‘ Mark Kleinman reporting today that the consortium is nearing a deal to purchase a stake of approximately one-third in Liverpool FC.Bezos consortium closing in on Liverpool investmentBezos is joined in the investory group by Eduardo Saverin, one of the co-founders of Facebook, and one source has indicated that an announcement on the proposed transaction could be made as soon as this week. One insider indicated that the deal is now expected to be larger than previously thought and could potentially involve a stake in excess of 30%.Want more Empire of the Kop coverage? Compare that with the reported $6bn valuation of LFC, and you get an idea of the enormity of riches which could become available to the club. However, the reaction to today’s news among Reds fans on social media has been mixed, to say the least, with many supporters appalled at the prospect of the Amazon founder getting involved at Anfield. This is a man who congratulated Donald Trump on his re-election as President of the USA and donated $1m (just under £750,000) to the latter’s inauguration in January 2025 (Axios), actions which fly in the face of the socialist, collective ethos of the Liverpool fan base.Numerous fans have also voiced concerns that, if the Bezos consortium ultimately completes a full takeover from FSG, the views of supporters would be completely ignored in the face of capitalism, and the core support base would eventually be priced out.The current ownership is far from perfect, but at least those at the helm now have demonstrably taken on board the feelings of the fan base and reversed unpopular policies accordingly. Also, just look at how the club has grown on and off the pitch since they ousted Tom Hicks and George Gillett in 2010.Alas, it now looks as though the consortium is rapidly approaching having a significant stake in our football club.

If they gain majority control, we can only hope they act in the best interests of LFC and its supporters.
