The investment group headed up by former Queens Park Rangers chairman Amit Bhatia will involve the Amazon mogul and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. Talks between the vehicle and Fenway Sports Group over a minority share of 30% will see the Anfield club’s valuation rise to £4.5 billion as part of the proposed deal.
Bezos and Saverin were approached by Bhatia, whose father-in-law and steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal is also on board, about joining the prospective bid. The consortium are expected to pay £1.35bn for their share which could lead to future long-term ownership of the club in the event of FSG deciding to sell up.
However the 62-year-old, whose net worth stands at an estimated £192.2bn, appears to now be willing to embark on a first buy-in of a European football club. Saverin’s personal wealth is ranked at £24.8bn while Mittal and his family are believed to be worth £15.44bn, making the trio the club’s richest shareholders.
