People living next to empty land told the ECHO they are in "dire straits"People living opposite an empty site in the shadow of Anfield stadium have said the state of the area is a “disgrace”. Those living on Pulford Street, which is opposite the site, told the ECHO this week they were fed-up with the lack of action.Liverpool City Council own the land, located off Walton Breck Road, and have dubbed it “Anfield Square”.

Previous proposals to build a hotel there have not come to fruition.In an update on Anfield Square in 2023, the council said that it would be “placing an emphasis on a new development that is rooted and focused on community inclusion”.Several people on Pulford Street say they have been told the current proposal involves a community hub and children’s day centre, and it is not uncommon to see workmen tidying the land and cutting the grass.They also said there is a plan to block off car traffic at the top of Pulford Street where it meets Back Rockfield Road with a set of bollards.A Liverpool City Council spokesperson told the ECHO it is is "progressing plans for its future development" on Anfield Square. They added the council is continuing to invest in Pulford Street and other streets in the Anfield area.Maggie, who has lived on Pulford Street since 1986, told the ECHO in 2014 she was increasingly isolated as so many of her former neighbours had moved on, adding she had been “left in limbo” over plans for the site.Over ten years later, Maggie told us nothing had changed.
